This interactive map shows how exposed different countries are to the risk of media capture across the 27 EU Member States, four Western Balkan EU candidate countries (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia), and Türkiye.
With the tools in the top bar, you can:
- See the overall level of media capture risk for each country and dimension.
- Explore specific aspects by selecting a dimension and/or a composite indicator.
Main areas of analysis
The map results reflect the vulnerabilities identified across each dimension:
- Media Ecosystem
- Political System
- Societal Context
Each dimension is further broken down into composite indicators:
| MEDIA ECOSYSTEM | POLITICAL SYSTEM | SOCIETAL CONTEXT |
| Political and business influence | Political conflict and polarization | Level of democracy |
| Pluralism | Political participation | Civil society participation |
| Transparency | Political rights | Corruption |
| Professionalism | Power distribution | Education |
| Information disorder | Rational-legal authority | Trust in institutions |
For a full explanation of what each area and composite indicator means, you can consult the Methodology section.
Understanding the scores
All scores range from 0 to 100:
- Lower scores mean a lower risk of media capture.
- Higher scores mean a higher risk of media capture.
These scores are shown on the map using different colors: the darker the red, the higher the risk.
Ranked view
You can also explore the data in a ranking format, using bar charts to compare countries across different areas and indicators.
To switch to this view, simply use the toggle in the top toolbar.
In this view, countries are ordered according to the selected dimension or indicator. A horizontal line is displayed across the chart, representing the mean value for each dimension/indicator. This allows you to easily compare each country’s score with the average.
