The BridgeGap Media Capture Risk Map is an interactive tool that reveals where citizens’ access to reliable and independent information is at risk across the European Union, four Western Balkan EU candidate countries, and Türkiye.
Today’s threats to democratic information systems are often subtle and systemic. Rather than focusing on individual media outlets, the Media Capture Risk Map looks at the entire information ecosystem, from political and economic influence to technological infrastructures.
The map highlights contexts in which particularistic interests quietly undermine informed citizenship, weakening democratic accountability and public debate. By adopting a holistic, risk-based approach, it helps make visible the early warning signs of media capture before they escalate into democratic failures.
